Information about Vaccine Recalls
Vaccines are tested for years before and after they are approved for use in the United States. Sometimes a vaccine or a particular lot (batch) of vaccine may be recalled from doctor's offices, clinics, hospitals, and other places that administer vaccines.
In the United States there have been only a few vaccine recalls, most of which were due to concerns about the vaccines' effectiveness, not their safety. When the strength of a vaccine lot is in question, those vaccines may not produce an immune response that is strong enough to protect against disease. Although those vaccines may not be effective, they are safe. Vaccines are tested and monitored continuously before and after they are licensed for use. If a vaccine lot is found to be unsafe, the Food and Drug Administration recalls it immediately.
