HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females. The majority of cervical cancers are caused by some of these HPV types. These HPV types can also infect the mouth and throat. Most people who become infected with HPV are unaware they are infected, and may unintentionally transmit the virus to someone to their significant partner. HPV vaccination is the most effective way to prevent HPV, which in turn can prevent cervical cancer.
